Adoption Policies & FAQs
Adoption Policies
The following policies are put in place to ensure the safety, comfort, and success of our dogs in their new homes. The adoptions staff reserves the right to make exceptions to these policies at their discretion, but only in extreme cases to accommodate the placement of a dog that may otherwise struggle to find the right home.
- Prospective adopters must have an approved application in order to meet dogs.
- Adopters must be a minimum of 21 years old and should be reasonably expected to live the life of the dog.
- Adopters must live within a commuting distance of the shelter, or be willing to drive to the shelter to meet their prospective dog. We do not ship or transport dogs to new homes.
- Adopters must be willing and able to provide complete medical care, including but not limited to, annual vet visits, preventatives, timely care in the event of an emergency or accident and all financial obligations that come alongside it.
- Adopters must have a reasonable plan for safe and appropriate care of the dog during working hours if they work outside of the home on a regular basis.
- Adopters must provide a safe environment inside of the home for the dog when they are not home.
- If adopters do not have a fenced yard, they must be willing and able to regularly walk the dog on a leash each day.
- All pets in the home must be spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccines and necessary medical care.
- Adopters in a rental unit, co-operative building, or HOA must have prior approval for the dog in line with any applicable breed or size restrictions, as well as be willing and able to pay relevant fees and deposits associated with pet ownership.
- Application information must be complete and accurate at the time of submission.
Common Questions:
The first step to adopting from Adopt-A-Dog is to find a friendly face (or faces!) on our website that you would like to meet. The next step is to fill out our brief adoption questionnaire. After you fill out our questionnaire, you will be contacted by our Adoptions Coordinator. Learn more here.
When you pay an adoption fee, you do much more than just bring home a new furry family member. Adoption fees go directly toward the care, feeding, and medical needs of our dogs, helping us find them their dream forever homes. It’s like a heartwarming pay-it-forward for future pups in need!
Adopt-A-Dog is not funded by any municipal sources—all of our resources come from generous folks like you who understand the value of giving a loving home to a dog in need. Our adoption fees are listed below:
- Puppies (up to 1 Year Old) – $550
- Young Adults (1 Year to 4 Years Old) – $475
- Adults (4 Years to 7 Years Old) – $400
- Seniors (Age 7 and Older) – $300
We’re thrilled you’ve decided to open your heart and home to a new furry family member from Adopt-A-Dog! We love people visiting the shelter, and you are welcome to do so during open hours, but we do require an approved application prior to meeting the dogs.
Approved adopters may schedule a Meet & Greet during our open hours (Monday-Saturday 12-4 p.m., excluding holidays) by emailing adoptions@adoptadog.org or calling 914-273-1674.
Please note that dogs in foster care are not located at our shelter in Armonk.
Yes! We almost always have puppies at the shelter. The population of dogs we house is constantly changing. Come stop by and meet all of our adoptables!
We are always looking for new volunteers to join our team. We have many volunteer opportunities available to socialize and spend time with the dogs, for more information please visit our Volunteer Opportunities page.
