How to Adopt with Adopt-A-Dog

Adopt-A-Dog has over 40 years of experience placing animals into forever, loving homes. Individualized care is shown to each dog at the shelter in preparation for their adoption. We get to know our dogs inside and out to provide adopters with as much information about their potential new family members as possible. The relationship we develop with our adopters is one of transparency, respect, and support.

We provide thorough training for each of our dogs, and this knowledge is passed on to our adopters to make a dog’s transition into a home as smooth as possible. Whether a first time or lifelong pet owner, we are with our adopters every step of the way, including after adoption.

How To Adopt

So you’ve decided to adopt…what do you do first?

See a dog you’re interested in? Please fill out an adoption application, and our Adoptions Team will reach out to you to learn more about what you are looking for in a dog within 24-48 hours.

If you do not see a dog you are looking for, fill out an adoption application to get on our waiting list for a dog’s specific breed or personality. Our team will be in touch to discuss your options and recommend other dogs that may be the right fit.

After you fill out our application, you will be contacted by our Adoptions Team to set up an appointment within 24-48 hours regarding the dog(s) you would like to meet. All meet and greets are done by appointment only.

I made an appointment; what should I expect?

At the time of your appointment, we ask that the adopter bring all family members (human-only, please!) to interact with the dog daily. We take pride in our close relationships with our adopters and start that relationship from day one. During your appointment, the Adoptions Coordinator and staff would give you a comprehensive profile for each dog and the next steps in the adoption process.

What if there are other four-legged friends in the home?

If the adopter(s) is adding a second, third or fourth canine member to the family, we would do an initial introduction at the shelter and then a subsequent home visit to ensure that the new family will live happily ever after.

I am in LOVE with the dog I met; when can I take them home?

If the potential adopter(s) decide that they would like to proceed with the adoption, our Adoptions Coordinator will finalize your application by checking references and preparing the adoption paperwork.

At the time of adoption, all adopters receive the complete original medical paperwork and records of their new four-legged friend, as well as some helpful behavior packets tailored to each pet. All of our dogs are fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped at the time of adoption.
